ASHLAND — Hike for Hospice slated for May 17

PORTSMOUTH

The 28th annual Hike for Hospice will be  at 9:30 a.m. May 17 at the SOMC Hospice Center. Check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Participants raise funds by asking friends to sponsor an amount per kilometer walked or by giving an outright donation. Participants also can join in groups of three or more, presenting banners, shirts or other forms of team-promotion.

Each team will receive one complimentary 8x10 photo and all hikers and supporters will be eligible for various prizes.

Hike for Hospice T-shirts are available and can be purchased from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through May 17 in the Gibson Building on the East Campus. Cost per shirt is $12 for sizes S through XL or $13 for sizes XXL through XXL. Shirts can be purchased in bright pink, safety yellow or white. Cash and check will be accepted.

Early registration is encouraged but hikers can also register the day of the event. For more information, call (740) 356-2651.

Prison program receives grant

DANVILLE

Pioneer Playhouse’s prison program “Voices Inside” has received a grant award from the National Endowment for the Arts for $15,000 to support its outreach and education programs in Kentucky prisons.

“Voices Inside” strives to fight recidivism through the power of creativity to teach socialization and communication skills and change lives. Classes are taught at Northpoint Training Center in Burgin.

Inmates have won the prestigious PEN Best Inmate Drama Award and Voices Inside inmate plays have been presented at Actors Theater of Louisville and on New York stages.  Robby Henson, artistic director at Pioneer Playhouse, is managing director for the program.

Church rummage sale set Saturday

ASHLAND

Meade Station Church of God will have its annual rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Household items and clothing will be among the items for sale.

Bowling for

children nears

HUNTINGTON

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Tri-State will have its 28th annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake May 12 at Strike Zone Bowling Center at 141 Eastern Heights Shopping Center on U.S. 60.

Participants may bowl two free games at 5:30 or 7:30 p.m. with teams made up for four or five. Teams may be family members, friends or coworkers.

Teams must solicit pledges and register to bowl during the event. A minimum of $125 in pledges per person is required for participantion.

Rough Riders to meet Tuesday

VANCEBURG

The Rough Riders Saddle Club of Lewis County will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Lewis County extension office, 284 Second St.

The agenda includes fiing horse show details, recapping April club activities and setting May trail ride for May.
