Girls’ Night Out at library next week

Boyd County Public Library will host its monthly Girls’ Night Out program on Wednesday with a showing of the movie “Playing for Keeps” at the main branch, 1740 Central Ave..

The movie starts at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $2, or bring a food item to share.

World Book Night will be Tuesday

Boyd County Public Library Friends will participate in World Book Night on Tuesday.

World Book Night is a way to spread the love of reading to those who don’t regularly read or who don’t have access to printed books, for reasons of means or access.

The non-profit nationwide initiative involves authors, publishers, agents, booksellers, libraries and readers. Each year, an independent panel chooses 30 books. Authors waive their royalties and publishers agree to pay the costs of producing the specially–printed World Book Night U.S. editions. Bookstores and libraries (and Friends groups) are selected to distribute the books.

BCPL Friends received 20 copies of David Sedaris’ “Me Talk Pretty One Day,” a collection of the humorist’s stories about being a transplant to Paris. Ashley Skidmore, president of BCPL Friends and an instructor of reading classes at Ashland Community and Technical College, said the books will be distributed on World Book Night to ACTC reading students. “Giving the books to those students definitely meets the criteria of World Book Night – those who currently do not reach much.”
