A local artist is seeking information about local drive-ins for a print he’s working on.
Tony Cumpton of Greenup County has drawn a print titled “Route 23 Road Trip” and is looking for information about the sites to include on the back of the print.
The print includes:
‰The Apache Drive-In Restaurant on U.S. 23 and Third Street in West Russell. It was wned and Operated by Everett Spears in the late 1950s and closed in 1973.
‰The Outpost Restaurant on U.S. 23 at 170 Russell Road in Bellefonte. It was owned and operated by Lewis R. Tanner in the late 1940s and closed in 1978.
‰The Bluegrass Grill on U.S. 23 at 3505 Winchester Ave. in Ashland. It was opened by Arch and Francis Riggall in 1946.
More is known about the Bluegrass; the original building was replaced in 1956; canopies, speakers and dining room were added in 1969. The restaurant closed in 2006 under the management of T.R. Cooper.
“One can remember the traffic ‘circling around the Bluegrass’ and making bumper-to-bumper road trips to other local restaurants,” Cumpton, who works in pen and ink, said.
The artist said he’s enjoyed drawing since he was a child. When he was 15, his father started a printing business and he started making prints.
“I illustrated poem books dating back to high school,” he said.
After starting work for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad as a clerk, he produced limited edition prints of railroad locations, such as the Ashland Depot and Freight House, the Russell Coal Dock and Depot, the Russell YMCA, the Catlettsburg Big Sandy Junction, Huntington Locomotive Shop, Raceland Car Shop and others.
He also has drawn several schools, including Raceland High, Ashland High, Ironton High, Wheelersburg High, Greenup County High (includes Wurtland, McKell, and Greenup City High), and his latest — Russell Independent Schools.
Cumpton said he has created 26 prints since 1980. HIs prints are in 23 states and he has more than 1,000 on his mailing list.
His prints are available at The Framing Bird Custom Picture Framing at 1210 Bellefonte Road in Flatwoods.
