ASHLAND — Programs mark Year of the Horse

ASHLAND - The Boyd County Public Library will host two teen programs next week to celebrate the Year of the Horse.

Programs to mark the Chinese New Year will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the main branch in Ashland and Thursday at the Kyova branch in the Kyova Mall and will include a sampling of Chinese food and a Chopstick Challenge. Ages 13 through 17 are invited.

Chinese New Year is the longest and most important celebration in the Chinese calendar. The Chinese Year 4712 begins on Jan. 31.

Hospice to offer workshops

HUNTINGTON - Hospice of Huntington will offer educational opportunities in the coming weeks.

‰“The Grief Journey:  A Six-Week Class” — 1 p.m. Wednesdays through Feb. 12, Hospice of Huntington office at 1101 Sixth Ave. The free, professionally facilitated session explores aspects of grief and ways of coping with changes after a loved one dies. ‰“Come Beat the Winter Blues” — 6 p.m. Wednesday, Hospice office. This is a potluck dinner; Hospice will provide meat and beverages and lead games. Registration is required; call the above numbers.

‰Caregivers’ Support Group — 3 p.m. Tuesday and 6 p.m. Jan. 30, Hospice office.  The free, professionally facilitated meetings will allow those caring for a loved one to find support from other caregivers. Registration is required; call the above numbers.

SOMC guilds report totals

PORTSMOUTH - The guilds at Southern Ohio Medical Center  achieved their goal in 2013, raising more than $65,000 as part of their effort to advance the mission of SOMC.

The guilds donated a total of $65,311.98, including a $30,366.08 donation from the Hope Guild. The Kardia Guild donated a total of $7,435.90, while the Pleasure Guild donated $10,050. Meanwhile, the Scioto Guild donated an amount of $17,460, with the proceeds from the annual flower sale.

SOMC is supported by a total of six guilds, including a newly formed Pediatric Guild. For more information, call (740) 356-8236.

Bridal event slated Jan. 26

HUNTINGTON - KEE 100’s Bridal Extravaganza will be from noon to 5 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena.

The event will feature bridal and formal wear fashions including offerings from The Rose Tree Boutique and Lara’s Bridals and Formals.

Door prizes are given away throughout the event using the main bridal registration, a three-night cruise for two leaving from Florida or California on either Carnival Fun Ship, Norwegian or Royal Caribbean International. Other prizes include a pearl necklace from CF Reuschlein Jewelers or a three-layer Paula Vega cake.
