Mason County found itself in a fight for survival against Elliott County in the last opening round game of the 91st Boys State Tournament in Rupp Arena on Thursday night.
Elliott County led 57-50 before the heavily favored Royals rallied for a 66-62 victory to advance to Friday's quarterfinals against Paducah Tilghman. The 16th Region champion Lions had dropped a 90-61 decision to Mason County back on Feb. 12.
But this time was different with Elliott County not only staying within striking distance but lead by seven points late in the fourth quarter. UK signee Darius Miller collected a couple of big rebounds as Mason County's 3-point shooters triggered a rally.
The Royals take a 31-4 record to the quarterfinals. Elliott County, making its second trip to the Sweet Sixteen, finished 26-4. Jonathon Ferguson scored 19 to lead the Lions.
