Now it's Danville — 05/02/08

Central Kentucky city latest to outlaw smoking in public

Danville has joined a growing number of Kentucky cities to enact ordinances banning smoking in most public places. Thus, the trend to restrict smoking in the state where tobacco was once king continues

By a 3-2 vote, the Danville City Council gave final reading to an ordinance prohibiting smoking in all enclosed places of employment, including seating areas of all outdoor arenas, stadiums and amphitheaters. The ordinance requires any designated outdoor smoking areas to be at least 10 feet from the entrance to any enclosed area.

It was just a few years ago that Lexington became the first city in the state to prohibit smoking in most public places. Since then, similar ordinances have been approved in Ashland, Georgetown, Louisville, Henderson, Pikeville and numerous other Kentucky cities. In fact, Bowling Green is about the only city of any size in Kentucky that does not place restrictions on smoking in public.

In city after city, smokers have protested the bans, but smokers represent only about 25 percent of the adults in Kentucky. That doesn’t give them much clout with elected officials faced with demands by non-smokers to restrict the right to light up.
