Camryn Patrick, a fifth-grader at Hager Elementary School, received an engraved medal and a framed certificate from the Boyd County Retired Teachers Association for her winning Grandparent Essay honoring her maternal grandmother, Joyce Fulks.
Patrick is the daughter of Stacy and Steve Patrick and a student of Destiny Myer.
The contest is sponsored annually by the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association to provide a means of expression for students to honor their grandparents.
As a county winner, Patrick’s essay will be submitted for district competition. She and other district winners then become eligible to participate in a recognition ceremony where the “Grandparent of the Year” and the student are honored at the annual KRTA Convention in Louisville on April 22. The state winner also will receive a $100 savings bond.
Patrick, her parents, her grandmother and her teacher were guests of the Boyd County Retired Teachers Association at their spring meeting this month.
At that meeting, she read her award-winning essay in which she stated how much she sincerely admires her grandmother and greatly appreciates all that she does for her.
She describes her as someone who is able “to take all the solutions and find the best one” and then “we get through things together.”
