Tim Preston: Plenty of events on the calendar
After a minor delay because of unexpected renovation work and a health inspection, the staff at Katie’s Corner Cafe officially re-opened the restaurant to a crowd of hungry customers at 6 a.m. Wednesday.
The business is back under the management of the original owners and the menu will include all of the entrees and desserts that helped make the place a signature business in downtown Ashland, along with a few new items, according to owner Nancy Tilton.
For information or to place an order, call (606) 325-KATE.
Making the gas last
Anyone interested in learning more about ways to conserve gasoline and get more miles per gallon may want to sign up for an Oct. 23 class at the Roberts Drive Campus of ACTC, taught by Richard Burnett, associate professor/diesel technology program coordinator.
The class will cover topics including synthetic oil, brown gas, high performance issues and normal maintenance.
There is a $20 fee for the two-hour evening class. For more information or to enroll, call (606) 326-2072.
Getting on the www
After hearing a lot of conversation about ways to get local businesses on the Internet, I was interested to learn about a pair of workshops titled “Creating a Successful Business Web site for Nearly Nothing.”
The first session, scheduled for Nov. 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., will focus on domain registration, selecting Web hosting, posting information, creating and publishing a Web site. The second workshop, set for Feb. 7, will teach ways to “creatively tweak” a Web site, increase exposure and monitor traffic and commerce.
The workshops, taught by Chris Boggs, ACTC assistant professor/information technology, is $40 for one or $60 for both. For more information, call (606) 326-2072.
Two decades of winter wonder
Community members have been invited to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Winter Wonderland of Lights event by contributing their own “Christmas Card to the Community.”
Organizations, businesses, churches and individuals are asked to design and paint “cards” no larger than two hinged-pieces of 4 feet by 8 feet plywood, and no smaller than 2 feet by 6 feet, to be displayed during Ashland’s annual winter display.
The cards can’t contain a commercial message for any organization, event or product and a short set of rules dictates further details for the sign to qualify to be displayed.
Monday (that’s tomorrow if you’re reading this on the day it was printed) was the deadline for participation, although organizers say they will be happy to work your creation in if you call them before the end of the day. For more information.Call (606) 324-5111 or 327-2007.
Workshops galore
The Morehead State University/Ashland Small Business Development Center also has a full schedule of training events on the calendar during upcoming months.
The workshops include: Budgeting & Financial Success for Today’s Woman, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 28; Defensive Driving Course for Individuals and Businesses from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 29; The Basics of Grant Writing from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 19; Stress & Time Management for Business Professionals from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 16; Self-esteem Building & Assertiveness Training for Business Professionals from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 16; and Coaching the Van Driver — Defensive Driving Course for Cargo and Passenger Vans from 9 to 11 a.m. on Dec. 17.
Most of the courses are free of charge, although there is a $20 fee associated with both of the defensive driving sessions. Each workshop will be conducted in the conference room at the Jesse Stuart Foundation on the corner of 17th Street and Winchester Avenue.
