MARK MAYNARD: How to improve on 20-0 10/01/09

Since Black Friday, when it looked like my good sense of predicting high school football games was gone for good, things have turned.

Since then my streak has gone the other way, the right way, in a hurry.

How about a two-week record of 20-0?

That’s the best turnaround this side of Louisa.

I have to be careful about not getting too cocky, as any good coach will tell you. Act like you’ve been there, isn’t that what they say?

But my good sense won’t let me and if I don’t crow about 20-0 now, when will I ever. Besides, I’m not being coached.

Look out belooooooow!

A couple of area teams will be looking at streaks again this week.

Lawrence County, already 5-0, tries to keep the good times going in Louisa with a game against Winfield, W.Va.

Boyd County tries to start having a good time after six consecutive defeats.

Ironton has a two-game losing streak and three would be rare indeed.

Ashland, the other team with a nice streak at 6-0, takes a week off before a much anticipated showdown with Johnson Central, which is also idle, a week from tonight.

Overall, in my estimation, it doesn’t seem to be that difficult a week. Then again, I’ve been wrong before (but not in the past two weeks; Oops, there goes that cockiness again).

It’s time to get down to business.

Week 7

Boyd County 21, East Carter 10: Lions find way to first victory of the season. It comes at the expense of the Raiders, who have struggled to sustain much offense for three weeks.

Rowan County 32, Greenup County 20: Vikings better be careful and not overlook the Musketeers, who have been boosted by speed merchant Rashard Carter in the past two weeks.

Ironton 21, Chillicothe 12: Fighting Tigers need a win to break that skid. They’ll get it in front of the home fans at Tanks Memorial Stadium.

Lawrence County 28, Winfield 6: The Bulldogs are tough up front and that’s what counts. Team Turnaround makes it six in a row.

Mason County 48, Lewis County 6: This one has a lot of ugly on it. Royals have one of the best teams in Class 3A.

West Carter 34, Morgan County 6: Comets are smarting from that narrow loss to Red Devils. They get to take out some of that frustration on the Cougars.

Raceland 40, Paris 20: Rams have too much firepower for Greyhounds. Fairview will be waiting next week.

Russell 28, Fleming County 22: This one has the makings of a dandy. Red Devils need to stay sharp with Mason County looming.

That’s it for this week. Next week, I’ll be making my predictions from the beaches of St. Augustine, Fla. — and I hope the sun gets in my eyes!
