TIM PRESTON: Many salons, fireworks and feed

This has been an unusual week in the sense that I could write this entire column about nothing but new hair salons. I don’t think I would be doing anybody any favors by doing that, so I’ll spread them out across the next week or so. If you read last week’s column, you may remember the note about Bella Si Salon opening in Westwood — don’t be confused by the first note of this week’s column.

Open in Catlettsburg

Following months of planning and renovations, Stacy Castle has opened Bella Si Spa & Salon at 3750 Louisa Road in Catlettsburg (along U.S. 23 next to Arby’s in the former Desires of Your Heart Consignment Shop).

Castle (who suffered through at least a dozen years of abuse from me as a schoolmate and neighbor) and her staff offer haircuts, coloring, perms and styling products along with body wraps, manicures and pedicures, tanning services, hair removal, basic ear piercing and make-up application. Future plans call for the addition of a licensed esthetician for facials and skin care services.

Bella Si Salon Spa & Salon welcomes walk-in customers and appointments. The salon manager is licensed cosmetologist Sue Reeves-Hornsby and the stylists are Ellen Messer and Rick Reed. Mikel Hornsby is the salon’s massage therapist. Bella Si is open from

8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday for salon services, and until 9 p.m. for tanning appointments.

For more information or an appointment, call (606) 931-0126.

Boom, boom,

boom, boom

We were cruising around Cannonsburg during Labor Day weekend when we saw flashes and fire in the sky above the Kyova Tri-State Mall and realized we had missed their Labor Day celebration and fireworks display, which included the opening of the patio at R.J. Kahuna’s.

Judging by the number of cars I see parked at the mall these days, the merchants and management are obviously having some success in attracting people back to the multi-business space. We stopped in the sports bar there before going to see a movie at Phoenix Theater (a place we both really liked), and I have to admit it was a great little evening out, yet still close to home.

First anniversary

I love to hear news that a small business has reached the one-year anniversary mark, and distinctly remember when the folks at Savanah’s Spa & Salon at 2941 Blackburn Ave. in Ashland (across from Foodfair, next to National City Bank) announced they were opening.

The staff, including owners Johnny Gifford, Vanessa Vale and “Little Miss” Savanah Gifford, along with Sarah Kitchen, Tonda Click, Dwayn Cline, Charlene Gauze, Kelli Harrison, Tiffany Johnson Hemphill, Heather Newsome, Monti Estle, Roberta Richards, Liz Alexander and Jane Mansfield will have an open house with refreshments, cocktails, live music and door prizes from 5 until 8 p.m. on Oct. 1. For more information, visit savanahssalon.com or call (606) 393-5350.

25 years

Mayne Framing Supply of Huntington will soon celebrate their 25th anniversary in business with a customer appreciation day on Oct. 10. The event will include a trade show with many of the framing industry’s top manufacturers, special sale prices and demonstrations along with a complimentary breakfast and lunch. The event is open to all picture-framing shops, photographers, art galleries and related businesses.

For more information, visit maynef@zoomnet.net or call (800) 638-3401.

Also appreciating

customers

The folks at KY Home Supply at 1410 Wolohan Drive (across the highway from Whayne Supply in Cannonsburg) have recently changed practically everything about their business, switching from an emphasis on plumbing fixtures and supplies to an entire line of hardware and an extensive selection of animal feed.

The business will have an open house event Sept. 25 and 26 with special prices on selected merchandise, free food and drink and door prizes to be given away every 15 minutes.

For more information, visit www.kysupply.net or call (606) 929-9888.

Need a grant?

An event that is absolutely suited to nonprofit organizations will be from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sept. 29 at the Jesse Stuart Foundation at the corner of 17th Street and Winchester Ave., Ashland.

The grant-writing workshop will provide the resources and skills needed to identify, research, write and submit grant proposals. The workshop is free, and will be instructed by Angie Whitley of Whitley Training & Consulting.

For more information, or to pre-register call (606) 329-8011.
