TIM PRESTON: Wilma’s Dress Shop opens location at Kyova Mall 090708

The staff at Wilma’s Dress Shop opened their doors at Kyova Mall this weekend, according to owner Diane Ferguson.

The opening marked the expansion of the Grayson shop into two locations, Ferguson said, citing her purchase of the business in 1988. The original owner, whose name was Wilma, was in business for more than 40 years before, Ferguson explained.

The shop specializes in special orders and stocks sizes 0 to 32 in addition to offering formal wear including prom and homecoming apparel, as well as women’s sportswear, shoes and jewelry. The business was also recently selected by this newspaper’s readers for having the best formal wear in the Tri-State.

To be re-opened

Before many of us even had a chance to try the food, the recently opened Gyro King restaurant in Ashland is now closed.

I spoke briefly with the man who I had seen working for nearly half a year to get the place open and he sounded heartbroken, to put it mildly. The restaurant was doing well during its brief run, he said, citing a partnership issue as the demise of the restaurant.

A sign in front of the restaurant states Gyro King will re-open Sept. 8 under new management.

In search of bread

I got a call from a reader this week who was concerned after finding the “day-old bread store” near the former location of the Bluegrass and Shoney’s is now closed.

If the surplus store is closed, there’s a chance the associated bakery has also had a change in status, but I haven’t tracked any information down on that yet.

The bakery surplus shop was a definite stop on the shopping list for many local people and the lady I spoke with was wondering if anyone can point her toward another in the immediate area. Already aware of the day-old bread store in Huntington, she is looking for something a little closer to home.

The course rating is 22 and it has a slope rating of 113. Designed by George Menshouse, the Sundowner Golf Course opened in 1961.”
