TIM PRESTON: Tell me where to go

My list of “staycation” suggestions is growing rapidly, although I still need more before I can assemble that information into a story.

This is wide open and anywhere you can get to on a tank of gas or with a few dollars qualifies. A couple of early examples are places like Carter Caves and Greenbo Lake, although I’m really hoping to find a wide range of options. Civil War sites, for example, are fascinating to some and dreadful to others. I’m trying to come up with a list that has a place for everyone. Please send your ideas to the e-mail at the bottom of this column.

On TV, again

A couple of area restaurants have been getting a boost from the Food Network recently and Sonnie and Sharie Knight’s Hillbilly Hot Dogs in Lesage, W.Va., will again be featured this week on the “Something Different” show. The program is scheduled to repeat today at 4 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., Monday at 2:30 in the morning, Friday evening at 9, at midnight Saturday and again a couple of times in the week to follow.

The restaurant, which was built using the architecture of two old buses, is known for entrees including a 1-pound deep fried hot dog and 3-pound hamburgers. People I’ve talked to use one word when describing the hot dogs: “awesome.”

Beanery talk

My telephone rang a few minutes after leaving the Ashland Boston Beanery last week, where I had asked the manager about rumors regarding the restaurant’s future here.

The call was from Boston Beanery President Dave Seman in Morgantown, W.Va., who had already heard I was in there snooping around. Seman said incorrect rumors may have started circulating after the company expressed interest in finding a local person to buy and operate the Ashland franchise.

Seman said the Ashland location has typically been a bit behind restaurants in other locations, although officials feel it is “a good piece of real estate” with excellent potential.

The company’s proposal for a local franchise purchase would be “a very good deal” for anyone capable of making the investment, Seman said. For more information about the franchise opportunity, call Seman at (304) 216-0753.

New at All Med

Josh Perkey has joined the staff at All Med on the Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital campus. Perkey dropped by last week and provided a bit of education about the “durable medical equipment” industry, as well as All Med’s efforts to branch out and increase its level of local service options.

The local business offers power and mobility products (think scooters), oxygen equipment, wheelchairs, sleep apnea products and practically anything else a doctor orders. All Med is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call (606) 833-0775.

Dropped names

A recent story I wrote about a local Special Olympics event failed to mention beverages for the event were provided by John Clark Oil, along with food from Chik-fil-A and volunteers from Elder Beerman. I know their efforts were appreciated.
