TIM PRESTON: Keep calling with business news 102608
If you tried to reach me last week you may have figured out I took advantage of the opportunity to take a vacation and celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary.
Looking ahead, I figured this is as good a chance as any to answer a couple of questions and solicit input from anyone with news of interest to the local small business community.
One of the main questions I encounter from week to week is “How much is this going to cost me?” The answer is always the same — nothing. Anything I write is free of charge and without any expectation of reward, although I have been known to sample the food if I’m writing about a restaurant.
I’m not in advertising (although I do encourage business owners to get in touch with our ad department to further their public image). All you have to do to get information in this space is call or e-mail with the “nuts and bolts” covering the business location, services offered, when the place is open, who’s in charge and the number to call for more information.
Trading
Post open
S.A.M.’s Trading Post recently opened at 630 W. Summit Road near the Summit Fire Department. Owner Jim Ballard said the business, under the supervision of manager Tony Slater, offers a full line of used work clothes as well as fire-retardant clothing, hand tools, jewelry, crafts and more.
The trading post is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Wednesday and Sunday. For more information call (606) 928-6128.
Business After Hours
The Ashland Alliance’s next Business After Hours will be Nov. 6 at the Elks Lodge from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
It is being sponsored by Time Warner Cable and the Alliance.
Music will be provided by Jeff Lewis & Friends.
TV changes coming
The dedline for the television changeover is fast approaching.
On Feb. 17, 2009, the Federal Communications Commission will require all TV broadcasters to turn off their analog transmitters and broadcast only in digital.
To help guide you through the process, KET is providing two valuable resources on their Web site at www.ket.org/dtv, or a toll-free helpline at (866) 291-8189.
Alltech road show
Alltech on the Road, a presentation on energy, argiculture and education, by Dr. Pearse Lyons, presidents of Alltech, will be Nov. 12 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Ashland Plaza hotel.
Alltech is sponsor of the 2010 World Equestrian Games and Lyons will be discussing that event’s impact on the state.
