TIM PRESTON: Great deli, GM expansion, yard sale 050309

A last-minute food gathering effort for an office lunch last week provided an opportunity to visit the deli at Jack’s South Ashland Cardinal Market in search of Ashland’s best cole slaw.

The staff at the market on 29th Street were extremely friendly and I had no problem getting in and out with a one-pound tub of their cole slaw. Fans of the family market also give highest marks for each of their many salads and sandwich spreads including the homemade pimento cheese, bologna salad, potato salad and “great” chicken salad, along with different styles of pasta salad and potato salad. The store’s deli is apparently quite well known for the quality of its barbecue as well.

Moving,

expanding

Matt Suman, general sales manager at Ashland’s Don Hall GM Supercenter, said employees are excited about moving their service department from the Greenup Avenue location to a renovated space at 18th and Front Street, in the former cabinet shop facility.

“It will be nice to be on the same property,” Suman said, explaining the move will put all of the dealership’s resources in one location.

The renovated space will offer several advantages for customers and staff, Suman said, later explaining many people seem to be investing in the vehicles they own rather than purchasing new models.

In response to an announcement that GM plans to cut many dealerships, Suman said the local business is safe — citing decades of operations in Ashland in addition to strong sales numbers and many other factors which work in their favor. For more information, call (606) 329-8777.

New in Westwood

Patricia Rice called to report Willow Tree Primitives, co-owned by Deirdre Rice and Sheila Johnson, opened Friday at 700 Wheatley Road in the Westwood section of Ashland, across from Westwood Christian Baptist Church.

“They have some really nice, pretty stuff,” Rice said, describing the shop’s inventory including specialty coffees, folk art and hand painted specialties and home decorations.

The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call (606) 922-9147 or 615-5218.

Big yard sale

Local officials are still waiting for details about this year’s U.S. 23 Country Music Highway Yard Sale, which has been scheduled for May 28, 29 and 30 at various locations along the stretch of highway from Greenup County to Letcher County.

Boyd County officials say they haven’t nailed down all of the local yard sale locations, although the property in front of Sargent’s Tires will once again be a designated sale area.

Current information abut the second annual Country Music Highway Yard sale will be posted at www.visitashlandky.com, and will be available by calling (800) 377-6249.

I spoke to people in several of the counties connected by U.S. 23 after last year’s event and know there was room for improvement. While it is impossible to predict the economy’s impact on this year’s yard sale, the event could easily attract a lot of new tourists to otherwise unvisited areas — if organizers make it worth the drive.
