TIM PRESTON: Almost ready for Italian? 1/07

The owner of a new restaurant coming to Ashland says he is just waiting for inspectors to visit the property before moving ahead with the new business at the former W.G. Grinder’s location on Carter Avenue.

Jose Garcia said he is not certain when the place will be open for business, although he hopes to have things rolling soon. I’m a little uncertain about the spelling, but the new eatery will be called Bella Fonte Italian Restaurant.

No applications have been filed, although city officials say the new restaurant will be eligible to serve drinks, with the options of applying for a liquor only, liquor and beer, or beer only permit. I’ll promise to pass on more information as it becomes available.

eBay Day

There are many of us who have too much good junk to deal with, but don’t like the idea of letting it go at yard sale prices.

If you fall into that category and wouldn’t mind making a few dollars from your collections, you may want to check out an upcoming event to be presented by the U.S. Postal Service at the Boyd County Public Library.

The free session is designed to give people a basic introduction to the online auction service eBay, and the shipping options provided by the post office. Amanda Clark, events coordinator for the local library, said the two-hour program will essentially be a demonstration, and won’t involve any hands-on computer time. The workshop is most suited to people who are unfamiliar with the Web site.

“It is really a good place to start if they don’t have any experience with eBay,” Clark said. “This is really the perfect place for them to start.”

Less than two dozen seats remain unreserved for the upcoming eBay Day at the library, and another workshop will likely be scheduled for the Catlettsburg branch.

The first session will be from 10 until noon, Jan. 16, at the library, 1740 Central Avenue, Ashland. To register, call Clark at 606-329-0518, extension 1140.

maurice’s gives

Rivertown Performing Arts League was presented a $500 check from the staff and management at maurice’s in the Ashland Town Center this week, celebrating the local store’s anniversary.

Customers were asked to nominate area non-profit organizations for the donation, with the $500 going to the group most mentioned.

The store’s parent company, dressbarn, is also working toward a $125,000 goal to benefit the American Cancer Society through sales of “Sophie the Springer Spaniel” plush toys.

The canine-inspired toys, available until Jan. 15, retail for $5 and maurices donates $2.50 from each purchase to benefit cancer research.

Sun Tan City

The timing may have seemed a little unusual for a grand opening and ribbon cutting at the new Sun Tan City in Russell this week as there was still snow on the ground at the time.

The timing, however, wasn’t as strange as you might think. A spokesman for the franchise said their peak business comes between mid-January and mid-May. The new Sun Tan City will include the latest in tanning equipment, products and sunless spray tanning.

The new shop, at 360 Diedrich Boulevard between Lowe’s and El Colonial, will be open from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 8 to 9 Friday and Saturday, and 8 to 9 Sunday. For more information call (606) 920-9758.

TIM PRESTON can be reached at tpreston@dailyindependent.com or at (606) 326-2651.
