Hopkins

William C. and Ruth Ellen Greene Hopkins celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner at the home of their daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Darrall Henderson of Lexington. Carol’s twin sister and her husband, Carman and Rick Roberts, co-hosted the dinner. Those attending were Justin and Rachel Roberts, Aaron Roberts and friend, Becca Griffin; and Megan Roberts and Lily Henderson.

Bill and Ruth were married on Jan. 7, 1958, on national television. They were married on “Bride and Groom” and the wedding took place at the NBC studios at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. The host of the show was Ed McMahon and the guest was Al Capp, who wrote “Li’l Abner.” The Rev. Paul James of New York performed the ceremony. The attendants were Linda Cassity of Ashland and Joyce and Jack Riggs of Russell. Ruth was given in marriage by her father, Herb Greene. Mr. Riggs also sang “Bless the be the Tie that Binds.”

Ruth is the daughter of the late Herb and Alice Greene. She is a retired teacher from McDowell Elementary School — Russell independent schools.

Bill is the son of the late Taylor and Myrtle Hopkins. He is retired from Ashland, Inc., South Point Ethanol. He is now serving as mayor of Russell.

In October 2007, the Hopkins’ met again with Ed McMahon, who was the guest speaker at an event in Lexington, given by the University of Kentucky Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Foundation and Fifth Third Bank.
