First Friday events — 09/05/08
On the first Friday of each month, arts venues in Ashland are open late with special activities and additional opportunities for the public to shop for original work by local artists.
The 1500 block of Winchester Avenue will be closed at 5 p.m. and music by City Heat will begin at 7 p.m. and continue until 9 p.m. Rain venue for the band is the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center.
In addition:
‰The Ashland Tennis Center will bring a portable tennis court for visitors to try out their tennis skills and sign up for lessons or league play.
‰The Young Professionals of Ashland Alliance are sponsoring a Corn Hole Tournament. Sign up will be at the Left Bank Café in the Pendleton Arts Center.
These downtown shops will have a sidewalk sale for First Friday:
‰The Olive Tree, Gourmet Kitchen Shop, 1601 Winchester Ave., open until 8 p.m., Specialty Foods, kitchen supplies and equipment.
‰The Pink Pineapple 335 15th St., open to 9 p.m. Children’s toys, clothing, and home goods are available. Summer items are on sale now.
‰Miss Gotrocks, 317 15th St., open until 8:30 p.m. Rodrigo Otacu Jewels and Eclectic Gifts.
For this month’s street fair, these restaurants will add limited food service on their sidewalks tonight.
‰C.J. Maggies, 1442 Winchester Ave., is a full service restaurant open until 10 p.m.
‰Left Bank Café, 1537 Winchester Ave., serves gourmet coffees, soups and sandwiches. Open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for lunch and 5 to 9 p.m. on First Friday.
Art venues include:
ANN DAVIS GALLERY: A selection of paintings by Alo Smal is on display in the Logan Room.
Items for the Oct. 3 auction, Chairs for Charity and Art for Hospice, will be on display for First Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. Works from the permanent collection will also be on exhibit.

ART OF THE REDEEMED STUDIO AND GALLERY: The gallery, in Suite 206 on the second floor of the Camayo Arcade, 1536 Winchester Ave., Ashland, is home to working artists Gail Kirtz and Rodney Chapman, both of whom work in various media and offer their original art and prints for sale.
Special exhibit — “Toothpick Constructions” by Les Hayes, which include a replica of his home, the Spider Web House, Cracker Barrel restaurants, the old Russell High School, houses, barns, churches and depots.
THE FRAME-UP GALLERY and CAFE ZEAL: The gallery is at 1436 Winchester Ave., across from Ashland Plaza Hotel. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
HIGHLANDS MUSEUM and DISCOVERY CENTER: Admission is free for First Friday. Kentucky Creative Arts Club exhibit continues. The museum houses exhibits on three floors celebrating Appalachian history and culture.
Several special exhibits are ongoing. The museum is at 1620 Winchester Ave.
JESSE STUART FOUNDATION: Exhibits include “Image of Appalachia,” a collection of more than 60 black-and-white photographs of eastern Kentucky and West Virginia from the 1920s and 1930s, and “The Leming Gallery,” a collection of reminiscences reflected in the work of local artists. Jim Marsh, Steve McClements, Billy Kersey, Buzzy Leming and Carolina Wilson will be on display.

NOAH ART GALLERY: The gallery is at 2200 Greenup Ave. Open 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday 11 to 3 p.m.
THE PENDLETON ART CENTER: The Pendleton Art Center is at 1537-1539 Winchester Ave. Artist of the Month is Holly Tatterson. A fashion show of wearable art is planned Saturday. Artists will display works in a collection titled “Scenes of Ashland.”
THE UPSTAIRS GALLERY: Oilist Gary Zornes of Russell is the featured artist for September.
Sidewalk artist will be Della Lewis, a novelist from Proctorville. She will sign booklets for her soon-to-be-published books “Into the Flame,” “Right Bride” and “Wrong Groom and Revenge.”
New artists photographer Dan Morgan from Ironton, specializing in landscapes, and David Kelly of East Liverpool, Ohio, a tile designer, are coming soon.
