Chilly theme to museum's summer series
By LEE WARD / THE INDEPENDENT
ASHLAND —
The Highlands Museum and Discovery Center, 1620 Winchester Ave., will host a series of children’s workshops on Fridays in July.
The series, titled “Winter Fun in the Summer Sun,” is for children kindergarten through eighth grade; classes are from 10 a.m. to noon.
Themes and dates are:
July 10 — Preschool Story Time
Hear the story of Axle Annie by the “fireplace” using the Music Quilt and fake snow. Participants also will create a winter scene around the letter “W.” For prekindergarten through second grade.
July 17 — Snow Activities
Using snow powder, learn the difference between “dry” snow and “wet” snow. Find out which makes a better snowman. Also find out other cool things that can be done with snow. For kindergarten through sixth grade.
July 14 — Cold Things
Did you know that there are things colder than ice. Discover some of those substances, what they are made of and how they are used. Students will also participate in a “sweet” experiment. For kindergarten through sixth grade.
July 30 — Science of Snow and Weather (StarLab)
This session explores what causes different winter weather patterns and how weather changes what we see in the sky. See different weather patterns in the StarLab portable planetarium and create a cotton ball snow scene.
This session separates children into age groups. Those kindergarten through third grade will have a session from 10 a.m. to noon. Those in fourth through sixth grades will have a session from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Class size is limited to 25, so registration is required and may be made up to the day of the session.
Cost is $10 per session. For more information, call director of operations Dan Blevins at (606) 329-8888.
