Complaint is not a personal attack
I wish to clarify to the citizens of Raceland and Worthington, who honored me by electing me into office in 2004, a statement that was made in the story concerning the Raceland-Worthington school board, published Nov. 15.
I have only voted against the majority of the board on two occasions: Once in October 2006 and again in October 2008. This is a matter of public record recorded in the monthly board minutes, and is available to anyone who wishes to verify it. On neither occasion did Jane Kincaid support me with her vote.
My decision to file a complaint with the Kentucky attorney general’s office is not meant as a personal attack on Don Nicholls but reflects my interpretation of Kentucky KRS.160.180, and the sense of obligation I hold to the duties I was elected to perform, as well as the standards I was elected to uphold.
Juanita Holbrook, member, Raceland-Worthington Board of Education
Dressing Room needs winter items
As Christmas approaches and the economy continues to struggle, low-income families of our area will need more help than ever. Unemployment has risen recently in our area, thus increasing the number of families needing a little help getting through the winter.
In an effort to help, the Dressing Room needs several items to meet these needs. We are collecting new and clean gently used: toys, blankets, socks, coats, hats and gloves.
The Dressing Room, operated by Federated Charities, is a community clothing closet, located at 328 19th Street in Ashland. This organization provided free clothing to 37,000 people in 2007.
Contributions can be sent to The Dressing Room, P. O. Box 611, Ashland, Ky. 41105-0611.

Superintendent has praise for staff
During American Education Week, I express my sincere appreciation for the Lawrence County educators and support staff for all they do to serve the children and communities of Lawrence County.
The theme this year — “Great Public Schools, A Basic Right and Our Responsibility” — reflects a calling to provide students with a quality public education that will enable them to grow, prosper and achieve in the 21st century. As school leaders, we have the solemn obligation to prepare our students with practical skills and abilities necessary for a hopeful and productive future.
Our schools, communities and elected officials have a common goal of wanting the best education and opportunities for Lawrence County students.
Again, I thank all of the staff, volunteers and community members who offer support to our schools and students toward the common goal of a quality education for every student.
Jeff May, Superintendent, Lawrence County Schools
