Fans not respectful of national anthem
Even though I am a senior citizen, I do attend some athletic events and believe this should be a fun event for adults, teens and children.
While at a football game recently, I was really saddened by the lack of respect shown when our National Anthem was played. I could hardly hear it for the talking and commotion going on. I would say about half of the crowd stood in silence to show respect when the colors of our nation when presented.
When our men and women are overseas fighting for us to have the freedom to attend these functions, can we not take 5 or 10 minutes to show the respect we should? Do you think they would not stand in silence as our colors pass in front of them?
Please, parents, be a proud American and start taking the time to do this and teach your teens and children to do so. It should be an honor to have the right to do so.

Riverhill Road needs sidewalk
Is there a sidewalk still planned for Riverhill Road leading to Wal-Mart in Ashland?
With employees and customers walking to work and to shop, it is a good idea. We need to help keep them out of harm’s way.

Kentucky needs a new senator
On Election Day, Kentucky voters will have the unique opportunity to change significantly the face of Washington by replacing the Senate's most adamant supporter of George Bush and his ruinous regime.
For the past 24 years, Mitch McConnell has been the paragon of the neo-con approach to government, achieving a 99 percent partisan GOP voting record. (Had he been opposed to flag burning it would have been 100 percent.)
His nefarious voting record includes supporting the Iraq War, giving tax breaks to Big Oil, opposing children’s health care, and rejecting the GI Bill that gave tuition assistance to veterans. Perhaps his most grievous offense was when he pushed through a bankruptcy law in 2005 that experts say helped lead to the $700 billion Wall Street bailout.
Kentucky and the country need better leadership in the Senate. Join me in electing Bruce Lunsford the next U.S. Senator from Kentucky.
