Webb has brought jobs to her district

On Aug. 25, voters in the 18th State Senate District will have a chance to go to the polls and elect a real representative with the experience and determination to fight for our interests.

For the past 12 years, State Rep. Robin Webb has demonstrated extraordinary leadership and ability as an effective legislator serving Carter and Lewis counties.

By electing her state senator, we can ensure that her talents will continue to be used to effect positive change for even more Kentuckians.

Robin’s record as a coal miner who worked her way through college; a mother who has courageously faced the worst of life’s trials and raised two superb children on her own; a community servant active as a soccer coach, sportsman and devout Christian; and a nationally recognized legislator whose leadership in Frankfort has brought jobs and much needed funding into her district speaks for itself. It is no wonder Robin was named “Legislator of the Year” for her work.

Throughout it all, Robin has not lost sight of the values that got her to Frankfort and the people who elected her.

Unlike too many politicians, Robin has more connections within her district than anywhere else in the state — a testimony to her commitment to serve others. She’s exactly what we need in the State Senate and would be the independent senator of which we have long been deprived in the 18th Senate District.

Unfortunately, Robin’s opponent has no record of service to run on and has opted to engage in a smear campaign and distort Robin’s record.

As out-of-state interests pour thousands of dollars into his campaign, it is important to remember where Robin is coming from and where she has been for us. And that’s why we need her in the State Senate.

Health care is spiritual issue

Would God back universal health care? God’s bias toward the poor and needy is a thread that runs through the Judeo-Christian Bible’s Old and New Testaments. I don’t believe God is pleased with America’s current status quo, a for-profit health care system which fails to cover those who, for whatever reason, cannot get coverage. God would have no one go hungry or go without health care.

We are the richest nation in history and can pay for universal health care if the will of our people is there. Politicians who say we can’t pay for health care for all are copping-out by not telling the truth. Too many politicians are in the pockets of powerful health care industries who are spending big bucks to kill a universal plan.

Working to get a health care system that covers everyone saves lives and offers Americans the opportunity to do just what God requires of all of us: to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with our creator. If we truly love our neighbors as we love ourselves, we should be willing to pay for health care for all, even if it means raising our taxes.

We can all be Good Samaritans as individuals as well as Good Samaritans as a nation. Are we willing to put aside our greed, deny ourselves, sacrifice for the common good? I believe that is what our creator would have us do.

Health care is for people, not profit. It is a moral — spiritual — justice issue. A system that covers all is in-line with God's Kingdom coming on earth and God’s will being done. It is up to us, not God, to see that universal health care comes to fruition.

Lowmansville reunion Sept. 5

The Lowmansville-Meade Branch school reunion will be Saturday, Sept. 5, at Chestnut Grove Church, which is next to Big Sandy Heating & Cooling at Lowmansville.

Activities will begin at noon. Hot dogs will be provided, so bring a desert, salad and drinks, as well as lawn chairs, and if you play, bring musical instruments.

1952 RHS class plans reunion

Raceland High School class of 1952 will have its 58th reunion on Aug. 29 at Greenbo State Resort Park. There will be a dinner and entertainment.
