Trash problem still being ignored

Why is it the mayor of Russell only wants to put a Band Aid on the major problem in Russell Heights. It sounds just like him to ignore the big picture that the residents are having with “trashy yards.”

We pay a little more each year as our taxes increase, yet nothing gets done except sweeping a huge problem under the rug in hopes that it will pass or be forgotten.

Well, no more. When will something be done about “trash heights”? It is nothing but a big eyesore for those few residents who actually care about there lawns.

Our town has ordinances that are ignored. Only at the mayor’s convenience or to his benefit will anything be done. We need a mayor who doesn’t see the town in which he represents through rose colored glasses!

Sarah Bennett, Russell

Russell Heights is not a dump

This is in response to the letters written about Russell Heights.

We live in Russell Heights and do not appreciate someone who doesn’t live there calling it a city dump. Who does she think she is to say what she said about people she doesn’t even know? Apparently, she doesn’t know what she is talking about.

We like our neighborhood and work and live the way we want. Before passing judgment on somone else, you should take care of yourself.

Is it an alley or private land?

Though I’m not over 150 years old, I know what property I own and keep records in case I should forget. Am I crazy for expecting the city to do likewise since taxpayer dollars keep them maintained?

Despite deeds referring to a common alley, the city of Ashland gave a neighbor permission to build on it. I brought copies of the deeds and the ordinance on the city Web site regarding the laws concerning closing an alley to a town meeting. It was obvious the alley had never been closed. After the meeting, I was approached by two others who told me the city had done the same to them.

Researching records, I discovered there are quite a few alleys the city has no records of beyond the deeds of adjoining properties. The city’s most recent plat is 1924. If deeds have no legal authority, does that mean these alleys are free for the taking? Or as in the above cases does the city get to ignore the law and give possession to whomever it wants or claims it first?

The city has maintained the alley behind my house for 14 years that I’m aware of. No liens have ever been placed on it for the work done. So if it was private property, the owner has received free taxpayer funded labor.

They can’t have it both ways. Either the alley exists as stated on all adjoining deeds. or it’s private property. In either case, it’s time they answered for their dereliction of duty or waste of taxpayer dollars and straighten this matter up.

If they are going to allow the neighbor to build on it, then they should also require them to pay for a minimum of 14 years maintenance.
