Program helps combat drug use

There's a new reality for our kids today, one that we as parents would never have thought probable. How we respond to that reality affects not only our children, but our children’s children.

The disturbing truth is that many parents whose children have used or are using drugs hide their heads in the sand until their child’s habit — their addiction — no longer allows them the comfort of denial.

There is inevitably a point in our children’s lives where they will have to make a decision to try or not try drugs. Contrary to belief, the voice most listened to in that decision is that of their parents. Although parents cannot stop their children from trying tobacco, alcohol or drugs, they can be more effective at positively influencing the child's choices.

“How to Drug Proof Your Kids,” a program of Focus on the Family will be facilitated by Pastor Jim Vamey of ENOUGH at Heritage Free Will Baptist in Boyd County Friday, Sept. 18, and Saturday, Sept. 19. Call (606) 928-4036 for more information or email rterrv.ecIipse@live.com.

The lure of drugs is strong and the effects devastating for those unprepared to handle their child's reality.

Democrats are for higher taxes

In the June 18 In Your View letter headlined, “Democrats are not supporting the military,” the writer is 100 percent correct.

It has always been said that “Democrats are for the working man.” However they have always left off the last of that saying. Here is the correct quote for the Democtatic Party: “Democrats are for the working man’s money.”

Every time the Democrats get in power, they want and will raise the taxes on the working man. If you don't believe me, just go back and check for yourselves. Democrats are for higher taxes, and the higher taxes are always on the working man.

When will the working man figure this out? Just wait until 2010. When you get your tax bil, see what will happen to your taxes. They will not be lower, but much higher as they are spending like there is no tomorrow.

Those who continue to believe the old saying Democrats are for the working man, sometimes you must be blind not to see the truth. Democrats are for a welfare state. Just send me a check and let the poor slob who works pay my bills. This is the Democrats’ mainstay.
