Bush’s ‘torture’ policy defended

The only mistake President George W. Bush made on the torture issue was allowing his staff to call reasonable interrogation methods torture.

Anyone who wants to know what real torture is like should read the reports of American prisoners of war from Korea and Vietnam.

President Obama and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will probably so restrict the CIA and FBI that they will create a scenario much like this one:

A weapon of mass destruction has been smuggled into the United States. If it isn’t found, it could kill tens of thousands of our citizens. An FBI agent is interrogating a suspect:

FBI: “If you don’t tell me where you hid the WMD, I will send you to bed without your supper.”

Fairview reunion will be June 6

Our annual Fairview Grade and Junior High School Reunion will be Saturday, June 6, at Fairview’s “old gym” which has been remodeled with air conditioning.

The reunion is for anyone who attended Fairview schools at this level. The reunion will begin with a social hour at 2 p.m. with the program at 4 p.m. followed by dinner at 5 p.m. Please bring your favorite food, table service and drinks.

Teachers and students who have photos and mementos of their days at Fairview are asked to share them with us. We invite those who haven't attended the reunion to come and enjoy the afternoon with us. We believe it is better to visit old friends now than grieve for the opportunity missed.

If you know someone who should be added to our mailing list, bring that information with you on Saturday, June 6. Come join us and share the memories.

Janice Virgin Hitchcock, Chairperson, Westwood

Harveytown school to have reunion

The 12th annual Harveytown Grade School reunion will be from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 6 . The former school now houses the Museum of Radio and Technology, Inc located at 1640 Florence Ave., Huntington.

Invite as many classmates and teachers as possible. Many who attended during the 1940s and 1950s have attended past reunions, but those who attended during the 1960s and 1970s ... Where have they been?

A walled display of the history of the school has been created. We’re still looking for a picture of Irby Junior High. The school was destroyed by fire around 1933 or 1934. The property was purchased by J.R. Bruce who built and operated a store there for many years.

For additional information on the reunion, call Tamara Hanshaw, (304) 522-7815; Carolyn Nelson, (740) 894-8440; Edith Frasher, (304) 529-9276; Earl Bush (304) 523-1102; Don Saunders, (740)894-5852.
