Words of Thanks — 05/16/09
The Ashland High School class of 1945 and other 1940s classes, plus their families and friends, met at the Ponderosa Steakhouse on April 24 for a “bruncheon” and enjoyed each other like a bunch of high school kids. The “reunion phenomenon” kicked in for 48 of us and gray hair, bald heads and wrinkles disappeared, replaced by hugs, laughter and lively talk.
We thank the following: Ponderosa, Tim Horton’s, CVS Pharmacy, Chick-Fil-A, Stump’s Hallmark, Wildwood Nursery and South Ashland Greenhouse, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Acknowledgements also go to Cliff Wylie, Jim Mokas, Roger Noonan and Nanette Pollock.
If the good Lord grants us the time to live so long, we’ll do it again next year.
Roger G. Noonan, Ashland
Girl Scout Troop 907 thanks Plaza Church of the Nazarene on Diederich Boulevard and its minister, the Rev. Kevin Campbell, for use of the church’s facilities.
The pastor taught our girls their parts for a Christmas program at the church. The pastor personally drives the girls in the church van for such activities as caroling at the nursing home. We’re provided our own room.
One event for which we are particularly grateful for is the drive-through coookies booth at the church. It’s a huge success. Our girls learn about sales, respect for customers, counting your product and money correctly.
Some of the girls did a flag ceremony at church on Girl Scout Sunday. The congregation was so appreciative. The girls were even invited to the annual Eater egg hunt.
I’m a Girl Scout leader from way back and have never seen such a caring church. This is true Christian love.
Shir Lewis, Troop 907 leader, Girl Scouts
On May 1-2, I held a 24-hour Scrapbook Marathon at the Flatwoods Public Library to support the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which raises funds to find a cure for breast cancer. Our friend Marti Foley will be participating in the 60-mile "Walk for the Cure” this fall in Dallas, Tex.
I thank the incredible sponsors who contributed door prizes for our event. The President’s House Bed and Breakfast in Catlettsburg supplied our grand prize of a night’s stay in their Lincoln Loft. Other contributors were Service Office Supply, Stanley Steemer and Dave’s Bakery from Flatwoods; Stump’s Hallmark, Identity Salon, GattiLand and Chick-Fil-A from Ashland; Corbie’s Gift Shop, N&M Candy Store and Golden Corral from Russell, and Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, which had a wonderful display about breast cancer support. Other contributors were Stultz Pharmacy, Dairy Queen and Camden Park.
