Protect your pets from hot weather

Hot weather is near, and with the rise in temperatures comes much suffering for animals.

Dogs need shade. Instead of providing shade, a dog house sitting in the sun quickly becomes an oven. Deprived of shade a dog can die a slow and painful death from heat stroke. Dog houses need to be placed under a large tree or a side porch needs to be built on the house to provide shade.

Dogs daily need plenty of fresh, clean water. Water will stay cooler and cleaner if it is in a bucket. Keeping a small scrub brush by the water spigot is a good reminder to keep the bucket clean. It’s also essential that cats have fresh water available at all times.

The care of a pet ought not to be put entirely in the hands of a child. Adult supervision is needed!

Many supposedly-loving pet owners make the grave error of leaving their pets in the car while they run errands during the warm months. Animals and babies are found dead every year locked in cars with the windows cracked. Even temperatures as low as 65 degrees outside can quickly soar to 120 degrees inside a car — resulting in agony and death. Please leave your animals at home and save the car rides for the cooler months.

Spend some quality time each day with your animals — pet them, talk to them, take them for a walk. Having an animal requires time and money. If you are unwilling or unable to give either, please don’t get an animal.

Each hour of each day, 12,500 dogs and cats are killed by animal control agencies in this country. You can help to stop this terrible suffering by having your male and female animals neutered or spayed.

Sinnette will serve district well

Who will speak with our voice? Who will stand up in Frankfort and represent all of us in Ashland, Catlettsburg, Boyd County and the 100th district?

The answer is Kevin Sinnette.

I have seen Kevin in action. As a former Ashland city commissioner and planning commissioner, I watched Kevin represent the city on many occasions. His gift for problem solving and knowledge of our region is unmatched.

When we elect him representative, Kevin will join the coalition protecting eastern Kentucky interests, while keeping the 100th district at heart. He will turn long-term commitment into long-term progress for our district.

Kevin Sinnette is clearly the choice for 100th district representative.

Obama seems real but not Clinton

Hillary Clinton is one of the most fake people I’ve seen. Queen Hillary voted for the war in Iraq. She voted to spend tax dollars on a Woodstock Memorial. She agreed not to count Michigan and Florida. Now she wants to count them after no one campaigned there.

It’s a shame that there are people who are not voting for Barack Obama because he’s black. Mr. Obama is the son of a white woman and a Kenyan. It makes you think he might be able to talk to different people and understand different situations.

At least Mr. Obama is not fabricating claims of experience. He seems very real to me.

I think he will have an open mind, and unite us as a nation. Mr. Obama can count on my vote. If he doesn’t get the nomination, I’d like to have a vote of no confidence.

It’s no wonder why people are bitter

The reasons for the bitterness and anger in small town America can be summed up with the knowledge that their jobs have been outsourced to cheap labor in India, China, Mexico, etc. If that’s not enough, the rest of their jobs have been taken by illegal or undocumented people who are willing to work at much lower wages.

The government has failed to enforce the laws of this country, and as a result we now have over 12 million undocumented people in the U.S. working illegally.

Barack Obama spoke the truth when he said that small town Pennsylvania people were bitter and angry and were holding to their guns and religion. Why? Because those are the only things left for them to hold onto.
