More gambling is not the answer

Here we go again: Another form of gambling to answer all our financial problems in education.

Their way of thinking is if our citzens will lose enough money, then we'll have enough for education. So in order to fund education just go out and lose more money. Now you can’t win, because if you win that won’t count. Someone will have to lose even more if you win.

I’m sure you remember Wallace Wilkinson’s promise: Vote in the lottery and our problems for K-12 grades will be solved. He got the lottery. So what did the voters get from the General Assembly the very next session? Only the highest tax increase in Kentucky’s history.

Check out states that have gambling and see what types of problems they encounter on a very much higher percentage: Stealing, killing, prostitution, abused children and spouses, lost income, lost productivity,just to name a few.

Kentucky can do better than this!

Bloodmobile needs first-time donors

March is Red Cross Month and the Boyd County Chapter’s community bloodmobile visit will be from 11a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, March 7, at the Central Fire Station.

Our blood supply is very low, and it takes more than the repeat donors, whom we are so proud of, to keep the blood supply on the shelves. We are making a plea for first-time donors to come and give the “Gift of Life.”

Being a donor, in 6 to 8 weeks you will receive a Red Cross Blood Donor card with your blood type on it. You will have your blood type to carry with you at all times which every body should have. One never knows when you will be asked your blood type, or when someone will need to know to be able to tell the doctor or hospital.

One pint of blood can save three lives. It could be a member of your family, a friend, neighbor, or maybe someone’s child. To donate you must be 17 years of age and weigh at least 110 pounds.

Many medications will be accepted if they are keeping your condition under control. If you are a repeat donor, you must wait 56 days from last donation.

Please consider becoming a Red Cross blood donor so your blood will be used in this region and your local hospitals will be served when blood is needed.

Senior center being formed in Russell

Any one interested in getting involved in forming a new Russell area senior center is encouraged to come to a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Russell City Building on Ferry Street in downtown Russell.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss a temporary location, activities and fundraisers to get our center started. We welcome anyone in the community, especially all Russell residents. All ideas and suggestions are welcomed.

It is a good time to support KET

I have been a volunteer at KET, Kentucky’s statewide public televsion system, for five years. I volunteer my time there because my family and I have enjoyed the diverse, wonderful programming and service KET provides, and I want to take part in passsing these things on to others in my community.

KET provides programming that focuses on Kentucky and keeps us informed on public affairs, arts, health and education in the commonwealth. From legislative coverage and weekly public affairs programs to KET’s Kentucky Channel — a new digital channel for and about Kentuckians — nobody puts the emphasis on Kentucky that KET does. Plus, KET serves the community through its any outreach efforts, including helping people earn their GED or college credit from home.

KET also delivers outstanding national programming including Antiques Roadshow, Masterpiece, Celtic Woman and many non-violent, commercal-free children’s shows that parents can trust.

For all these reasons, I support KET and urge others to do so. There is no better time to show your support than during KET’s upcoming TeleFund 2008. March 1-16. You’ll be proud to be a member of KET, knowing that you’re helping to keep great programs and services on the air for all Kentuckians.

1968 Wurtland class plans reunion

The Wurtland High School class of 1968 is currently planning its 40-year high school reunion, tentatively scheduled for late July.

We are currently searching for classmates. If you or anyone you know graduated in 1968, please call or e-mail us with contact information.
