Words of Thanks — 02/23/08
The Huntington Area Food Bank (HAFB), staff and member agencies sincerely thank the 70 disc-golf players who braved the cold air and participated in this year’s Ice Bowl 2008 event on Jan. 26.
This fun event was a major success because of its leader, Don Kleppe. It was through Don’s outstanding leadership that our food bank received a total of 274 pounds of food and $8,692 in monetary donations at this year’s Ice Bowl. We, in turn, are now able to distribute more than 60,000 pounds of food to our member agencies throughout the Tri-State area.
This donation is greatly appreciated by the food bank and the 85,000 hungry people served each month. In our 25th year, the HAFB and the agencies we serve depend on members of the community, like Mr. Kleppe, who continue to help us feed the less fortunate Tri-State citizens.

With the help of hundreds of local children, Boyd County Public Library recently made Valentine’s Day a little brighter for more than 1,000 people.
Through its 4th annual Hands that Touch a Heart campaign, the library made 1,077 Valentines. Of those, 573 went to recovering U.S. soldiers, like HM3 Tsz Yeung, a Navy hospital corpsman, who sent the following note: “I have just received your Valentine’s cards and they are absolutely beautiful … My fellow shipmates and I have read every single one of them and put them on our display board.”
The remaining 507 cards went to residents of local nursing homes and assisted living centers.
Thanks to the following for helping: Grace Nazarene Church, Girl Scout Troop 979, Miss Mullins’ kindergarten class, Miss Tomlin’s art class, students at Crabbe, Catlettsburg, Summit and Oakview elementaries, and others who took the time to make a card!
Amanda Gilmore, Community relations coordinator, Boyd County Public Library
On behalf of the People Helping People Inc. Board of Directors, I extend sincere thanks to Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ashland. They graciously donated $3,000 to our organization. We appreciate the fact that Saint Paul’s entrusted us to determine how the funds can best be distributed.
People Helping People has been around since 1988, and we provide financial assistance to area residents in the form of utility payments, medical/prescription expenses, grocery/food purchases, funeral expenses, etc. Our primary source for raising funds is Thursday and Friday evening bingo games in Coalton, so outside contributions like Saint Paul’s are uncommon and very welcome.
We can assure Saint Paul’s staff and congregation that their $3,000 donation will be wisely allocated.
John Jenkins, director, People Helping People
The Ashland Putnam Stadium Restoration Foundation thanks the many who made our first fundraiser a success. The turnout was great!
Thanks go to the Ashland Putnam Stadium Restoration Foundation and fundraising sub-committee members: Chef Paul Runnels and his wife Janet from the Chimney Corner Café, Phil Eason and the Board of Education, Blazer principal Derek Runyon, Jenny Reese, Luann Serey and Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, Mike Baldridge and SYSCO, Ashland Specialty Company, Leon Hart for selling the most tickets, Ashland Walmart, J&J Restaurant, Captain D’s, KFC on Winchester Avenue.
As the foundation looks to the future of the stadium we envision a completely renovated facility. Many hours will go into the planning and renovation, but the effort will be worth the expense when the community views a restored stadium.
Address correspondence or donations to Ashland Putnam Stadium Restoration Foundation, P.O. Box 1901, Ashland, Ky. 41105-1901.
Dan Kelly, president, Ashland Putnam Stadium Restoration Foundation
