Ways to go on ‘low carbon diet’

I’m writing to hopefully increase people’s awareness of global warming. Few people understand that if we don't do something about it soon, it could be too late to reverse serious consequences.

Global warming happens because the gases emitted chiefly by power plants and cars trap heat inside our atmosphere. This is a global problem, which requires switching to cleaner energy sources by everyone.

Each individual thinks, " What can I do? I’m only one person "

Helen Keller said, “I am only one person, but I am one. I can’t do everything, but I can do something.”

Individuals can take positive action or else our children and grandchildren will have to pay the price.

Here’s your chance to go on a “low carbon diet.” Saving energy isn’'t just good for our planet; it’s good for your pocketbook.

Check for places air may be leaking out of your home. Check for inadequate insulation and insulate pipes that carry hot water throughout your home.

Microwave ovens reduce energy by about two-thirds compared to conventional ovens.

Replace standard light bulbs with new compact fluorescent bulbs. Look for the energy star on appliances. Wash clothes in warm or cold water. Run full loads. Turn off computer monitor when not in use for 20 minutes. Only run dishwasher when there is a full load.

A reforestation project would be great since trees will capture the green house gas, carbon dioxide from the air.

Slow down and drive less aggressively. Keep your engine tuned, tires inflated and wheels aligned.

Set heat at 55 and air conditioning at 85 while on vacation. Put your lights on a timer. When staying at a hotel turn off lights and TV when you leave the room.

Let’s all do something.
